small town radio

March 2, 2008

You know how radio stations go in a large metro area like Northern Virginia/DC metro. There’s the modern rock station, the classic rock station, the hip-hop station, the top 40 station, the soft rock station, the country station, the jazz station and so on. DJs are slick (maybe even a bit x-rated on some stations) and ads are often national in nature rather than local. But, if you like unassuming DJ’s who read out birthdays every morning, ads done by the managers of the local establishments themselves, a mixture of all kinds of music – in short the stuff you would hear on any small town radio station, you can still get that today in Northern Virginia. Tune in to WINC (92.5) located in Winchester, VA. You may just feel that you’ve escaped to the country for awhile.

Dance Dance

March 2, 2008

You probably see developmentally disabled (mentally retarded we used to say) folks all the time with their families or their group home compatriots in grocery stores, restaurants and other places. Have you ever wondered what they may like to do socially?

Well, the answer to that question is DANCE! On Saturday, May 5, the “Friends and Family” group of Service Source (a group of volunteers from a great organization that provides employment to the developmentally disabled in Northern Virginia) held their yearly dinner dance. As soon as the band started playing, without the buoying of any alcohol, almost every guest at the dinner hit the dance floor and stayed on the floor until the band took a break. When the band resumed, the dancing resumed. Mostly folks danced as couples but those without a partner danced by themselves or in big groups. The band has played this event every year for as long as anyone can remember because they like the energy of the dancers so much.

So smile next time you see one of these folks at the grocery store.
